‘Game of Thrones’ Director Jeremy Podeswa Joins ‘Blade Runner 2099’ Limited Series at Prime Video

Naman Ramachandran The next magnum opus from Amazon Prime Video India is “Jubilee,” a period piece that charts the growing pangs of India and the rise of the country’s Hindi-language film industry that would come to be known by the term Bollywood in later years. Beginning around the months in 1947 when the subcontinent was partitioned into India and Pakistan, the dramatis personae in the series include studio boss Srikant Roy (Prasenjit Chatterjee), his movie star wife Sumitra Kumari (Aditi Rao Hydari), trusted aide with acting ambitions Binod Das (Aparshakti Khurana), talented refugee Jay Khanna (Sidhant Gupta) and courtesan Nilofer (Wamiqa Gabbi), whose worlds collide.

“The Power” has arrived on Prime Video, and it marks a somewhat rare occurrence on television: a show about and for women, directed almost entirely by women. Naturally, that was pretty appealing to the women in it — but also to some of the men.The series, adapted from Naomi Alderman’s 2016 book of the same name, follows multiple women all around the world, as they all begin to develop a new organ in their body that allows them to not only control but expel electricity at will.

Joe Otterson TV Reporter Netflix has found the main cast for the limited series adaptation of the Elin Hilderbrand novel “The Perfect Couple.” Variety has learned that Nicole Kidman has officially signed on to star in the series, as has Liev Schreiber, Eve Hewson, Billy Howle, Dakota Fanning, Meghann Fahy, Ishaan Khattar, Jack Reynor, Sam Nivola, Mia Issac, Donna Lynne Champlin, and Isabelle Adjani. The show originally received its six-episode order at Netflix in August 2022. The official logline states, “Amelia Sacks (Hewson) is about to marry into one of the wealthiest families on Nantucket. Her disapproving future mother-in-law, famous novelist Greer Garrison Winbury (Kidman), has spared no expense in planning what promises to be the premiere wedding of the season — until a body turns up on the beach. As secrets come to light, the stage is set for a real-life investigation that feels plucked from the pages of one of Greer’s novels. Suddenly, everyone is a suspect.”

Another year, another super-expensive TV series to premiere on Prime Video. And while the $250 million budget for “Citadel” isn’t as costly as “The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power,” it indicates that Amazon wants its new spy thriller to be another juggernaut for its streamer.

David Cronenberg’s 1988 thriller, “Dead Ringers,” starring Jeremy Irons, isn’t in most Top 3 lists for the filmmaker. Sure, there are fans of the original, but it doesn’t have the devoted fanbase as films such as “The Fly,” “Crash,” “Scanners,” and “A History of Violence,” for example.

Now in production, the Peacock Original series is being produced by Synchronicity Films and will be entirely directed by Tali Shalom-Ezer, whose past credits include “Princess.” Claire Mundell and Jacquelin Perske are executive producers. A global bestseller, “The Tattooist of Auschwitz” has sold more than 12 million copies around the world. “In Auschwitz, a factory of death and dehumanisation, Lale and Gita’s love story is an act of defiance,” said Shalom-Ezer. “It is the choice to remain human. I’m inspired and honoured to bring this story to life, alongside the talented team of people assembled,” Shalom-Ezer continued.

Back in 2017, director Denis Villeneuve and producer Ridley Scott delivered “Blade Runner 2049,” a legacy sequel to the 1982 film that brought back Harrison Ford as the titular Blade Runner, Deckard. The events of that film left the door open for a direct sequel with a replicant uprising, however, plans for a spinoff series “Blade Runner 2099” from Alcon Entertainment and Scott Free Productions became the priority as it landed at Amazon.

Jeremy Podeswa (Station 11, Game of Thrones) is joining Prime Video’s limited series Blade Runner 2099 to direct the pilot and serve as producing director. He will also serve as executive producer. 

Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large “Game of Thrones” alum Jeremy Podeswa has signed on to direct the pilot of Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming limited series “Blade Runner 2099.” Podeswa, most recently the DGA Award-nominated director behind HBO Max’s “Station Eleven,” will also serve as producing director and executive producer of “Blade Runner 2099.” A TV sequel to the film “Blade Runner 2049” (itself a sequel to the landmark original “Blade Runner”), the new series comes from showrunner/executive producer Silka Luisa (“Shining Girls”). Ridley Scott is also an executive producer on “Blade Runner 2099,” which comes from Alcon Entertainment and Scott Free Productions. Also joining the writers room is Tom Spezialy (“The Leftovers”), who will also serve as an executive producer. “Blade Runner 2099” has been a long time coming. Scott first revealed the series was in the works in November 2021, while Amazon revealed it was in development in February 2022. The series was officially ordered last September. A plot for the new Prime Video series remains under wraps.

On the verge of losing the family business, he seeks help from his uncle in America, who has made a career for himself as a character actor in Hollywood. A flashy, larger-than-life personality, the uncle returns to his native city after 40 years to help his nephew save the theater while also reconnecting with his own past.
