Manchester’s sky park will stay open until autumn 2024, it’s been confirmed, and bosses hope to make it a permanent ‘walk-through’ green space which connects Manchester to Salford and Trafford.
However, to make it a reality, the National Trust will need to secure around £20 million in funding. As the charity searches for the cash, it’s employed a landscape architect to imagine what a permanent park would look like.
And, it’s been confirmed today (July 21) that the council’s planning department has approved a bid from the charity to keep it open until the end of September 2024. In February, the Manchester Evening News revealed that bosses hoped to keep it open until December 2024.

“The aspiration is to make it a connector to Salford and Trafford, so [extend it] by another 850m,” James Millington, from BDP, the landscape architect firm employed by the National Trust, told the M.E.N. “We want to make it more of a connector and there are more angles the viaduct can bring to Manchester, and the region.
“There are communities that we can tap into. There will be daily commuters, and people coming from a stroll.”
The 47-year-old went on: “It’s the sky park. It can just be a park — or it can become a green lung for Manchester and bring nature closer to Manchester.”
At the moment, the park is roughly 150m long, meaning adding another 850m will take its total length to 1km. Turning it into a ‘walk-through’ park, where people can enter and exit at different points, is one of the most common bits of feedback the National Trust has received from visitors.
