The UK Foreign Office has issued fresh travel guidance for Belgium after two Swedish football fans were fatally shot in the street in Brussels on Monday. Police have since shot dead a suspected Tunisuan extremist accused of killing the two Swedes.
The shooting took place not far from the Belgian national stadium, where Belgium was playing Sweden to qualify for the Euro 2024 football tournament. The match was suspended at half-time as a manhunt was launched to find the shooter.
Several hours later, Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden told broadcasters the assailant had been found and the weapon believed to have been used in the attack was recovered. Following the shooting the terror alert for Brussels was raised overnight to four, the top of Belgian’s scale, indicating an extremely serious threat.

Previously the alert level stood at two, signifying an average threat level, while the alert level for the rest of the country was raised to three. The UK Foreign Office has warned Brits in the Brussels region to avoid all non-essential travel and to follow the guidance of local authorities.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said: “A shooting took place on Boulevard d’Ypres in central Brussels on 16/10/2023. The authorities have confirmed two fatalities.
“Avoid the area and follow the advice of local authorities. Brussels-Capital Region is now at threat level 4 of 4: avoid all non-essential travel. This is a developing situation – follow the advice of local authorities.”
