A major airport in Sicily has been forced to close until Wednesday (July 19) afternoon after a fire broke out in the terminal. Flights at Catania airport have been suspended following the blaze which occurred on Sunday.
The airport said that there were no injuries reported and that it would not reopen again until 2pm on July 19. The blaze was contained within 90 minutes, firefighters said, but they haven’t given any details on the possible causes, Reuters reported.
The UK Foreign Office has urged holidaymakers heading to Sicily to contact their travel operator. It said: “Due to a fire in the airport terminal, Catania airport is closed until 14.00 on July 19. You should contact your travel operator for details of cancelled or diverted flights.”

It comes as Sicily and other areas in the Mediterranean are experiencing a blistering heatwave, although officials have not said that there’s any link between the airport fire and the hot conditions. The soaring temperatures are due to the Cerberus heatwave.
In Italy, health warnings have been issued as temperatures are expected to reach nearly 40C in Rome. The Italian health ministry issued 10 recommendations to protect elderly people and the sick as well as pets, urging people to stay indoors during the hottest hours, drink at least 1.5 litres of water a day and refrain from strenuous exercise at peak daylight times.
