Two holiday flights were diverted to Manchester Airport on Wednesday night after a 'defect' in the runway at Newcastle International Airport was identified and inspected.
It led to the closure of the runway at Newcastle for a short period last night.
The airport said five inbound flights were diverted as a result, with two going to Manchester, two to Teeside and one to Edinburgh Airport.

Three outbound flights from Newcastle were cancelled or rescheduled for Thursday, the airport said.
Tui flight TOM5MC from Paphos in Cyprus to Newcastle was diverted to Manchester, alongside Jet2 flight LS1920 to Newcastle from Larnaca, Cyprus.
A flight from Krakow went to Edinburgh, with flights from Southampton and Aberdeen diverted to Teesside.
Newcastle Airport apologised to passengers affected and said the runway was quickly reopened again. Flights were today - Thursday - operating as normal.
In a statement, Newcastle International Airport said: "Our runway was closed for a short period last night while a defect was inspected. This was completed as quickly as possible and the runway reopened.
"Unfortunately as a result, five inbound flights opted to divert during the short closure and 3 outbound flights were cancelled or rescheduled to today.
"Flights are now operating as normal and we apologise to any passengers affected."
