Drivers are being warned that a common eye condition that often goes unnoticed could land them with a hefty fine and points on their licence.
Motoring expert Dom Watt, from First Vehicle Leasing, has highlighted that cataracts, which often affect older people, can make driving unsafe. Cataracts cloud the lens of the eye and, if left untreated, can seriously reduce vision.
The condition can make it harder to drive, especially at night or in bright light, as vision can become blurry or misty. Cataracts are more common in people over 65, but because the condition develops slowly, many might not realise their sight has got worse to the point where it's not safe for them to be behind the wheel.

Part of this renewal process involves declaring any medical conditions that might affect driving, including eye conditions like cataracts. However, there is no mandatory retesting of eyesight, leaving the onus on drivers to ensure they are fit to drive.
Older drivers found to be driving with poor eyesight due to cataracts can face severe penalties. Beyond the immediate financial penalty and points, the implications can extend to increased insurance
