If you find that your home is riddled with dust that won't budge, it may be down to a common cleaning error, according to one interior specialist.
Dust is one of the most common causes of allergies, and it can also cause asthma, which makes it a problem for sufferers. If you don't have any allergies, dust may still be an issue as it also causes sneezing, coughing and other symptoms that make it difficult to live in your house.
When you break out the duster, your first instinct may be to open the windows to let particles escape and bring in fresh air. But according to Rosalind Peters, home interior expert at beanbags.co.uk, doing this may actually be intensifying the problem.
"Dust particles can get into your house through open windows or doors. If you have an air filter system in the house, this will filter out most of the dust before it gets inside," she explained.
"However, if you don't have an air filter system installed yet or if you have one but still find yourself sneezing or coughing, keep all windows closed as much as possible during the day when there is no breeze outside.
"This will help keep dust from entering through open windows and doors."
The specialist has shared her other top tips to keep your home dust free that won't cost you a penny. As well as keeping windows shut, layering surfaces with newspaper, cleaning blinds with a sock and placing houseplants in certain areas also work wonders against the irritant.
Wardrobes and cupboards tend to accumulate dust because they're high up on walls and hard to reach.
To combat this problem, add old newspapers onto the tops of these areas where dust tends to settle. The newspaper will soak up any excess dust before it has a chance to come into contact with surfaces below
