OSCARS | EMMYS | GRAMMYS | TONYS
UPDATED: April 20, 2023 Weekly Commentary: Paul Walter Hauser is the leading contender for his terrifying performance in Apple’s “Black Bird” with his portrayal of serial killer Larry Hall. His late co-star Ray Liotta (who sadly passed in May 2022) delivers a heartbreaking turn as the hard but loving Big Jim Keene, a father in constant worry for his incarcerated son James (Taron Egerton). A posthumous nomination for the veteran actor is well deserved and within reach. Last year’s winner Murray Bartlett didn’t return to the second season of “The White Lotus” (competing in drama categories), but he has two shots at Emmy gold in the race — guest drama actor for “The Last of Us” and his work as choreographer Nick De Noia in Hulu’s “Welcome to Chippendales,” which another stand out performance by the actor. Emmy Nominations voting runs from June 15-26. The Primetime Emmy nominations will be announced on July 12. Check back every Thursday for the latest updates. All information is preliminary and is subject to change. ** This

Murphy stars as theoretical physicist and “father of the atomic bomb” J. Robert Oppenheimer. In a recent interview with the Associated Press, the actor admitted he “was desperate” to lead a Nolan movie. “I have always said publicly and privately, to Chris, that if I’m available and you want me to be in a movie, I’m there. I don’t really care about the size of the part,” Murphy said. “But deep down, secretly, I was desperate to play a lead for him.”

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter Each night at Broadway’s new musical-comedy “Shucked,” audiences are treated to the sweet (and pun-filled) story of Cobb County residents Maizy and Beau, who are forced to postpone their wedding when the corn stalks that fuel their small rural town are ravaged. But the show’s undeniable breakout is Maizy’s cousin Lulu, a local whiskey distiller who convinces her too-innocent relative to travel to Florida to find a way to save their crops. Alex Newell, who plays Lulu, brings down the house in the middle of Act I with the show-stopper “Independently Owned,” an anthem to warn to Maizy’s new friend Gordy, a conman pretending to help Cobb County, that she don’t need no man. On most nights, the rafter-shaking performance concludes with the rare mid-show standing ovation.

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor “Beef” has raised the stakes. Variety has learned exclusively that Netflix and the creative teams behind the new dark comic series have chosen to seek Emmy Awards consideration as a limited or anthology series instead of a comedy, where many pundits had assumed it would campaign. Starring Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, the series dropped on the streaming platform on April 6, garnering positive reviews from critics and audiences. Currently, the show sits at 99% on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and 92% from audiences. Created by Lee Sung Jin, best known for writing and producing HBO’s “Silicon Valley” (for which he received an Emmy nom for outstanding comedy series in 2015), the darkly comical romp was announced in March 2021 and commissioned as an anthology series for Netflix.
