OSCARS | EMMYS | GRAMMYS | TONYS
UPDATED: April 13, 2023 Weekly Commentary: It’s still not clear where the men of HBO’s “Succession” will campaign so we’re operating off educated guessing, assuming Kieran Culkin makes his leap to lead actor drama and Brian Cox goes the way of guest drama actor. Cox has the dealer’s choice assuming he’s not seen in any other episodes. With that probability, a wider open race emerges with three remaining actors from Jesse Armstrong’s drama series vying for attention — last year’s winner Matthew Macfadyen, twice nominated Nicholas Braun and the still unrecognized Alan Ruck. Based on the outlook of the season so far, Alexander Skarsgård may be eligible in this race for the first time, as he’s been appearing in many episodes of “Succession.” Interestingly, his father Stellan Skarsgård of “Andor” could be among the eight names called on nomination morning, which could be one of the first times (if not the actual first) a father and son are recognized alongside one another in an Emmy acting race. Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor Elizabeth Olsen calls herself an “unemployed” actor — even after playing Scarlet Witch in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and her latest role as Candy Montgomery in the HBO miniseries “Love & Death.” “I don’t want to work for work’s sake,” she tells Variety. “I don’t know how to half-ass stuff, so I have to love something a lot. And there are things I love, and it’s tough to raise money for them.” Olsen, 34, has multiple projects she wants to make with some unnamed first-time narrative directors but is finding it difficult to secure the financing that would allow them to have creative control. So, while she continues navigating Hollywood’s grounds during an unsteady economic time and a possible writer’s strike, she says she’s enjoying this break after working three years straight with Marvel (including two years of shooting and one year of promotion). “I don’t miss it,” she says.
James Kennedy is probably one of the only members of the “Vanderpump Rules” cast members to think Tom Sandoval and Raquel Leviss’ relationship could last.
His most uncensored thoughts. James Kennedy had an unexpected answer when it comes to Raquel Leviss‘ future with Tom Sandoval following their affair.
James Kennedy is oddly rooting for his ex-fiancée, Raquel Leviss, and Tom Sandoval. The 31-year-old star was a guest on Wednesday's episode of , where he opened up about the future of Leviss' relationship with Sandval after he cheated on Ariana Madix with her. «In a weird way I hope so,» he replied when host Cohen asked if he thought the controversial pair would work out.
Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor Shiv’s the boss! On “Succession,” Sarah Snook plays the youngest Roy daughter Siobhan “Shiv” Roy, who isn’t sitting idly by while her newly minted co-CEO brothers run the media empire Waystar Royco — and neither is Snook with her Emmy chances. Variety has learned exclusively that Snook will be submitted into the lead drama actress category for this year’s Primetime Emmys, changing from her supporting bids for the three previous seasons. “Succession” is exhibiting its finest writing, directing and acting of the show’s short history. With each new weekly episode, Snook has shined dramatically, becoming the season’s clear standout of the large, sprawling ensemble. This campaign shift could now firmly cement her as the presumptive front-runner for the most coveted television prize for acting.
Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor SPOILER ALERT: This interview discusses gargantuan plot developments in “Kill List,” Season 4, Episode 5 of “Succession,” now streaming on HBO Max. Kieran Culkin hasn’t yet watched this week’s episode of “Succession” because he’s traveling — and doesn’t like watching things on his laptop. Having wrapped filming only six weeks ago, and with upcoming episodes still in post-production, Culkin isn’t even sure how the gripping story of this family dynasty will end. The April 23 episode “Kill List” was written by Jon Brown and Ted Cohen and directed by Emmy winner Andrij Parekh (for Season 2, Episode 3, “Hunting,” aka the “boar on the floor” episode), showcased one of Roman’s most emotionally driven scenes throughout the four seasons of “Succession.” In its tension-filled 60 minutes, Culkin demonstrated his abilities as a dramatic actor during a heated exchange with streaming media giant CEO Lukas Matsson (played exquisitely by Alexander Skarsgård). In the scene on the Norwegian mountaintops, Matsson insults Roman and Kendall (Jeremy Strong), the newly minted co-CEOs of Waystar Royco, as they try to “Scooby Doo” their way out of the GoJo deal the board desperately covets.

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor Roman Roy is now co-CEO of Waystar RoyCo on HBO’s “Succession,” so it’s only natural that actor Kieran Culkin followed suit with his Emmy campaign. Culkin, who plays the sarcastic and jokey Roman on HBO’s hit drama series, confirms to Variety exclusively he will be submitted for the lead drama actor category at this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards. This marks a category switch for the actor, who previously submitted in the supporting categories for the three previous seasons. Roman has come to the forefront during this fourth and final season of the show, leading the way on the Waystar-GoJo deal with his siblings Kendall (Jeremy Strong) and Shiv (Sarah Snook).

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor Warning: This story contains spoilers from “Connor’s Wedding,” the third episode of “Succession” Season 4, now streaming on HBO Max. Cox’s acclaimed performance has received multiple accolades for the HBO drama, including those two Emmy nominations for the second and third seasons for lead actor (drama). He was nominated alongside his co-star Jeremy Strong, who plays his eldest son Kendall, and who won for the show’s second season.
