An elderly woman tragically died after being unable to use her personal alarm due to a broken telegraph pole, her neighbours have claimed. Locals in Maerdy, South Wales, say the pole was damaged after a car ploughed into it on December 1.
Following the crash, elderly residents on Tan y Bryn were left without functioning personal alarms, which relied on phone lines. The alarms allow vulnerable people to call for help if they are in an emergency.
Ceri Coombes, who lives on the street, says she and several neighbours were concerned about the impact on a number of residents. She said that she contacted service providers, Openreach, and the office of local MP Chris Bryant, but the issue had not been dealt with.
Tragically, within days of Ceri raising the issue and it not being dealt with, an elderly woman died alone on December 10 after being unable to use her personal alarm, Wales Online. She has since been named as Margaret Green.
Ceri said: “I started to get a bit concerned because we had some elderly neighbours who had [personal alarms] which run off the phone line. I rang my provider and they said it was Openreach’s problem and it went back and forth a few times.
“I kept going around in circles so I contacted MP Chris Bryant’s office [on December 6]. I spoke to his office and was told they would see what they could do. I relayed how important [personal alarms] are. I called back the next day and they said they are waiting for a department to get back in touch. I thought: ‘Well that’s another day these people will be without their lifelines’.”
And last Monday, frustrated Ceri received a devastating phone call. She said: “My neighbour rang me asking if I had heard back from anyone about the telegraph pole. She said it’s too
