Eddie Howe says Newcastle striker Callum Wilson came through his 30-minute return from injury against Liverpool “fine” but was vaguer about Joelinton’s fitness ahead of Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Manchester United.
Wilson returned from a hamstring setback for the second half of the Magpies’ 2-0 loss while Joelinton was unhappily substituted off despite having to be treated for an apparent hamstring issue himself during the contest.
The Brazilian indicated he wanted to play on but Howe was soon seen saying to his attacker that he was being brought off for his own good. Speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle after full-time, Howe said he was awaiting the result of Joelinton's injury scare ahead of Sunday.

He said: "We hope he's OK. He wanted to carry on - I wanted to protect him for the games ahead. We hope it's not serious.”
Speaking later on to reporters, Howe detailed that he was relieved that Wilson had managed to see out half-an-hour without further issue. "Callum did well, I was pleased with him and I'm just pleased he managed to get through that 30-minute spell fine,” he said.
Howe will definitely be without Nick Pope for Sunday’s Carabao Cup final after the goalkeeper was shown a straight red for handling outside of the area in the first-half, with suspensions carrying across all domestic competitions.
Loris Karius, yet to make his Newcastle debut, or fourth-choice Mark Gillespie will be required to keep guard the goal with Karl Darlow loaned out to Hull and Martin Dubravka cup-tied after playing in earlier rounds for United during his loan spell.
