EastEnders' Gemma Bissix's life now as she looks unrecognisable 30 years after soap debut

Gemma Bissix is set to celebrate her fortieth birthday on June 6, and will have been acting for more than thirty years when she does. The soap star, who recently opened up about her experience of sexual assault as a teenage actress , first appeared on EastEnders when she was just nine years old. It’s probably no surprise that, some three decades on, the star has changed a lot.
She joined the show as Clare Bates in 1993 and remained in the role for five years before leaving the soap in 1998. Gemma later joined rival soap Hollyoaks in 2009 when she played Clare Devine for two years. The star would reprise her role on Hollyoaks twice - first, when she returned in 2009 and four years later in 2013 when she made a fleeting comeback.
Just before joining Hollyoaks, Gemma had decided to reprise her role on EastEnders in 2008, but left again after just six months. She would later confess that she found it difficult to go back to the “realistic” style of acting expected on the show. Although she’s probably best known for her soap acting, the star also has plenty of theatre experience.
She’s appeared in a series of pantomimes, including Snow White, Aladdin and Cinderella. Gemma’s also had bit parts in other hit TV series including Doctor Who, in which she played a young woman possessed by a malevolent alien entity, Mongrels and The Crust. In 2009, she turned her attention to reality TV when she competed in Dancing On Ice.
Gemma didn’t have a very successful run on the show and wound up being the second celeb to be eliminated after failing to impress either the judges or the public.
