An earthquake was recorded just 12 miles away from the outskirts of Greater Manchester on Tuesday evening (January 2).
The seismic alert for the earthquake marked the location as near Buxton in the Peak District at around 5.30pm. The British Geological Survey (BGS) recorded a magnitude of 2.5 and said the earthquake was three kilometres deep.
Met Office Meteorologist Greg Dewhurst shared the alert on Tuesday night, which located around 2.5km - or around 1.5 miles - from Buxton's centre. The BGS said it measured 2.5ML, or Richter Local Magnitude. This is defined to be used for 'local' earthquakes up to 600 km away.

One person shared a post to Facebook, writing: "I heard a bang in my kitchen, as if something had fallen, but I couldn’t see what it was. There was no sensation of shaking, but there’s a basement underneath my ground floor flat in a Victorian-age building."
However, earthquakes of a magnitude of 2.5 or less are unlikely to be felt by humans - but can still be accurately recorded by a seismograph.
The last time an earthquake was felt more locally in Manchester was in 2018, when tremors from a 4.4 magnitude earthquake near Swansea, south Wales, rippled across the region. It was the biggest seismic event in the area for 112 years.
