The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has made a small update to the way that free prescriptions work across the country, with a change that reflects how benefits have transformed in recent years.
Currently, anyone who claims Universal Credit and has work-related earnings under £435 in their last assessment period, or £935 if they receive payments for children or disability, is entitled to receive free prescriptions, dental care, and vision tests.
This will remain the same, but the way that benefits recipients register that they are eligible for free medication due to low income will change. Currently, there is a check box on the reverse of the prescription asking which benefit you are receiving.

On some forms, this check box only asks if the patient is receiving income-related Jobseekers Allowance, which can be confusing for those who are on the new-style Universal Credit, who are meant to just tick the box anyway.
In an update to their information, the DWP has said that this box for Jobseekers Allowance will disappear and a box simply asking whether the claimant is receiving Universal Credit will replace it. This will clear up confusion in the pharmacy and make it more clear for patients that they are entitled to a free prescription.
If you think you have incorrectly paid for a prescription and are receiving Universal Credit, you can get a refund so long as you kept your receipt. You must fill out a FP57 refund form, which you can only get from the pharmacy that dispensed your prescription.

But school attendance is vitally important for children and young people, and is highly beneficial for the vast majority of children.
