A warning has been issued to thousands of people over changes to Universal Credit by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).
MPs have cautioned that any mishaps in the transition from older 'legacy benefits' to Universal Credit could result in "real-world misery for thousands". The DWP has been told it must ensure it supports claimants, some of whom are "vulnerable", to make the switch without losing their benefits, according to a report.
The DWP has maintained that benefits are only ever halted as a last resort after multiple unsuccessful attempts to engage with an individual. The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) stated that the DWP anticipates that around 4 per cent of those currently on legacy benefits will not transition to Universal Credit under the process known as managed migration.

Universal Credit was introduced in 2010 as part of a plan to reform the welfare system, replacing six means-tested legacy benefits for working-age individuals. These include Working Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, Housing Benefit, Income Support, income-based Jobseeker's Allowance, and income-related Employment and Support Allowance.
As of March last year, approximately 2.2 million households were receiving legacy benefits, and the DWP has been striving to transition 900,000 of these to Universal Credit. The PAC noted that the DWP is faced with the "challenging task of moving claimants off its own legacy benefits, some of whom are likely to be vulnerable".
