Michaela Zee editor Domee Shi and six of Variety’s animation honorees gathered at this year’s Variety 10 Animators to Watch event, presented by Nickelodeon, on Thursday night. The in-person awards ceremony and cocktail reception took place at the Nickelodeon Animation Studio in Burbank, Calif., where fellow creatives and representatives in the animation space celebrated this year’s class of rising storytellers. The honorees in attendance included Fawn Veerasunthorn, Arthur Fong, Shea Fontana, Sergio Valdivia, Natasha Kline and Juston Gordon-Montgomery. Pixar Animation Studios filmmaker Shi received the 2022 Creative Impact in Animation award.
“It’s pretty surreal that stories about dumpling infanticide and magical, furry, Canadian puberty have been embraced by all of you guys and by audiences of all ages and backgrounds,” Shi said in her acceptance speech. “But it’s also a testament to how influential our medium of animation is, in exploring specific complex themes in a way that resonates with everyone. Animation, while a fun escape, can also hold a mirror up to our own struggles, and help us understand ourselves better.”
A past 10 Animators to Watch recipient, Shi is known for the Oscar-winning short “Bao” and her feature directorial debut, “Turning Red.” She also worked on such animated features as “Inside Out,” “Incredibles 2” and “Toy Story 4.” “I was that shy Asian kid with a stutter. But when I drew, I was suddenly powerful,” Shi continued. “Drawing is how I connected with others — it’s how I made friends. I was that girl in class who’d draw your favorite Pokémon for you.” In April, Pixar announced that Shi would be promoted to vice president of creative, joining directors Andrew Stanton, Peter Sohn and Dan

Liza Foreman CANNES – Three film women of Japan hit the Croisette on Tuesday for Mipcom’s Asian World Premiere screening of Kansai TV’s groundbreaking female TV reporter series “Elpis,” set in Japan’s male-centric TV universe. In the plot, a female journalist has been demoted, following a scandal, to “Friday Bonbon,” a show far less serious than the newscast that she was involved in before. She soon gets her mojo back, however, investigating a complicated murder case with the help of some friends in high places. It’s not necessarily easier being a female producer than a reporter in Japan, said Sano. The industry is “10 years behind” in terms of women breaking through in film.

Andrew Barker Senior Features Writer “A Chinese Canadian tween undergoes magical puberty and turns into a giant red panda.” As far as elevator pitches go, it’s not exactly “‘Jaws’ in space” or “snakes on a plane.” But that highly specific logline is the one that Domee Shi used to persuade Pixar to greenlight her feature directorial debut, some half a decade ago when the then-20-something was a budding storyboard artist on the studio’s Emeryville campus. Shi’s film, “Turning Red,” delivers on every bit of that premise, focusing on a confidently nerdy Toronto girl named Mei and her loving yet strict mother, Ming, whose perfectly ordered lives are thrust into chaos by Mei’s sudden transformation. The film was released last spring, and immediately notched a number of milestones for the studio: the first Pixar feature solely directed by a woman, the first Pixar feature with all-female creative leads, and only the second Pixar feature directed by a person of Asian descent. But the particulars of Shi’s identity aside, it also represented the emergence of a singular new voice within the celebrated studio, and everything from its cultural specificity, to its animation style — impressionistic, frantically paced, anime-influenced — to its openness in addressing the messiness of early adolescence (from menstruation and mother issues to the suggestion that a tween girl’s love of a particular boy band might have some extra-musical motivations) felt both of a piece with the Pixar tradition and something invigoratingly new.
KC Orcutt While success is often said to be the result of good planning, one could argue that a plan is only as good as the team executing it. From conceptualizing the stage design to crafting an engaging run of show, event production is a collaborative art not for the faint of heart, especially when the intention behind a brand activation is to honor philanthropic achievements and celebrate those making an impact. Now in its 13th year, Variety’s Power of Women event, presented by Lifetime, is an homage to women in the entertainment industry who are leading the charge and dedicating their time offscreen to supporting various charities and causes. As Power of Women, which takes place twice a year in New York and Los Angeles, continues to grow and expand, Variety and its collaborators take great care in executing an event that, as the name suggests, is all about elevating and empowering women. As such, it is only fitting that a conscious effort is made to hire vendors of different backgrounds to produce an event of such magnitude, with an emphasis on partnering with women-owned and operated companies.
