‘Un Amor’ Review: An Excellent Laia Costa Brightens Isabel Coixet’s Dark Return to Form

Guy Lodge Film Critic The negotiations of adult sexual relationships, as well as the demands forced upon single women in society, are recurring fascinations in the work of Spanish writer-director Isabel Coixet, albeit to erratic effect: In recent years, particularly in such English-language efforts as “It Snows in Benidorm” and “The Bookshop,” her voice has felt unconfident, even a little stifled. But Coixet strikes with a renewed sense of conviction in “Un Amor,” an adaptation of Sara Mesa’s Spanish-language bestseller that plays to her unusual strengths as a full-blooded feminist filmmaker.

Rod Stewart during an awards ceremony in the mid-’00s.The TV star, who has managed her husband Ozzy Osbourne‘s solo act and band Black Sabbath over the years, said in a new interview that she wasn’t impressed by Brand’s behaviour at the 2006 GQ Men Of The Year Awards. Her comments came in the wake of Brand last week being accused of rape and sexual assaults alleged to have taken place between 2006 and 2013. ‘The Holdovers’ review: The year’s warmest movie

the atomic bomb, a revisionist doll and CGI Harrison Ford have gobbled up our attention, for better or worse, but not because any of those varied titles have much heart. Then there’s the “The Holdovers,” directed by Alexander Payne, which is set during frigid Christmastime at a Northeast boarding school that’s nearly empty of students. The lovable dramedy, which just screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, is blanketed in snow and ice — and it’s the warmest cinematic experience you’ll have all year. Running time: 133 minutes.

Why the MTV VMAs — once the hottest awards show around — don’t matter anymore

had a viral moment — before “viral moments” even existed — during the opening number when Madonna kissed both Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera.Seemingly in shock — just like the rest of us — Spears’ then-fresh ex Justin Timberlake looked on awkwardly from the Radio City Music Hall audience. And 10 years ago, at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, Miley Cyrus infamously twerked upon Robin Thicke during a performance that forever unblurred the lines between the former Disney darling and Hannah Montana. But Cyrus — despite having one of the biggest songs of 2023 in “Flowers” — is, at press time, just one of the top pop stars who is not even slated to appear at this Tuesday’s MTV VMAs, which will take place a New Jersey Transit hike away from the buzz and bright lights of New York City at Prudential Center in Newark, NJ for the second year in a row (and third time since 2019).Unless any major surprises happen, though, Cyrus — who is up for five Moon Persons — is in good company as a VMAs no-show with her fellow superstar nominees Beyoncé, Drake, Harry Styles, The Weeknd and Ed Sheeran.Even six-time nominee SZA — who, with her No. 1 smash “Kill Bill,” has had the kind of killer year that used to guarantee a big VMAs splash — is paying them dust.

Pete Davidson, John Mulaney, Jon Stewart stand-up review: Big laughs in AC

Atlantic City’s Etess Arena, Jon Stewart got in a good line about the evening’s lineup.“We’ve got the three stages of show business here tonight. Rehab, recovery and hospice.”The crowd laughed and the former “Daily Show’ host launched into 45 minutes of fresh, punchy material. However, like all good jokes, there was a kernel of truth to Stewart’s throwaway bit about his brief five-show tour with Pete Davidson and John Mulaney. Each act represented a different stage of adulthood and that evolution made for a fascinating three-course comedic feast for fans of the trio.To clue you in to what went down at the Sunday 7 p.m.

‘Memory’ Offers Painful Reminder the Academy Still Owes Peter Sarsgaard an Oscar Nom: Will They Remember This Year?

Clayton Davis Senior Awards Editor It’s time for Peter Sarsgaard to finally shatter the Oscar glass. It was a breakout performance in the early days of online Oscar punditry that had everyone buzzing.

‘Memory’ Review: Jessica Chastain & Peter Sarsgaard Reconnect, Disrupt Several Lives In Michel Franco’s Thoughtful Drama – Venice Film Festival

Sylvia (Jessica Chastain) lives behind an exceptionally well-locked door. Her apartment has three locks of different kinds, keeping out anyone who managed to get past the intercom protecting the front entrance. As a woman living alone with a teenage daughter, perhaps she has her reasons. Just tonight, a man followed her home from her high school reunion, catching the same train, shadowing her from the station and finally sleeping outside her building under a plastic bag. Strangely, she is quite blasé about that: In the morning, she deals with it, demanding this man’s phone and finding someone in his contacts who can come and pick him up.
