Sir Cliff Richard sparked uproar among viewers at home after making a “rude” comment about Elvis Presley on the This Morning sofa. During an appearance on the ITV show on Monday 20 November, Cliff joined hosts Alison Hammond, Dermot O’Leary and Sarah Ferguson, where he discussed his incredible chart-topping career.
And as part of the conversation, Sir Cliff was asked if he’d ever met Elvis, causing the Mistletoe and Wine singer to reveal that he’d once refused to have a photo taken with the King of Rock because Elvis “had put on a lot of weight”. “No I did not, I had one chance through a journalist when I was promoting Devil Woman in the States,” he explained when asked if he’d ever met the Suspicious Minds singer.
He added: “He said, 'Oh, I know Elvis' because he knew I was influenced and he said, 'Do you want to meet him?' “And I said, 'Yeah', at the end of the interview though I said, 'Can we put it off?' He had put on a lot of weight and I thought, 'If I am having a photograph taken with him and it's going to be hanging on my refrigerator, he has got to look good'.” 83 year old Cliff went on to explain that he put off meeting Elvis again, but sadly the Jailhouse Rock singer passed away before he ever had the chance. “So I put it off and then, of course, he died,” he said.
After hearing the story, Alison responded: “You should never have put it off just because they're a little bit heavier.” In turn, Sir Cliff provided his own words of wisdom after learning from his past experience. “If you're a fan of somebody's and you get the chance to meet them, meet them even if they have put on weight,” he laughed.
