Gathering on a sunny Saturday afternoon, hundreds of people gathered at Piccadilly Gardens as part of an event to mark the second anniversary of the war. A group of Ukrainians have been meeting at this spot in the city centre every weekend since Russia's full-scale invasion started to raise awareness of the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Meeting at 2pm next to the Queen Victoria statue, the group began their march on Portland Street, singing as they went. A sea of blue and yellow, the group continued throughout the city centre.
There was a significant police presence as officers monitored protesters, with the march passing peacefully down Cross Street, Great Bridgewater Street and onto Deansgate. The march turned onto St Ann’s Street then back towards Portland Street where it culminated on Piccadilly Gardens for speeches and singing.
Bus services were affected and trams were briefly halted to allow the protest to take place.
Along the way, the group sang the national anthem, played various Ukrainian music and chanted about the ongoing war. At some points they were applauded by members of the public, some of whom honked their horns and others clapped as they walked past.
