Disney distribution boss Tony Chambers said Wednesday during the studio’s CinemaCon presentation that Dungeons and Dragons and Star Trek star Chris Pine will voice King Magnifico in Walt Disney Animation Studios’ new musical comedy Wish.
Pine joins already cast Oscar winner Ariana DeBose and Alan Tudyk.
Pine’s character is the ruler of Rosas, a magical kingdom where wishes really do come true.
“As the most powerful person in the kingdom, King Magnifico needed to be played by someone who could give all the charm, cleverness and charisma to this magnanimous character, and Chris is beautifully bringing all of that and then some,” said Jennifer Lee, Wish‘s executive producer and one of the pic’s scribes.
Wish opens in the traditional Disney corridor of November 22. The film also helps mark the culmination of Disney100, a yearlong celebration honoring the legacy of Walt Disney.
Wish introduces Asha (DeBose), a sharp-witted idealist who makes a wish so powerful that it is answered by a cosmic force — a little ball of boundless energy called Star. Together, Asha and Star set out to prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars, wondrous things can happen.
Oscar-winning director Chris Buck (Frozen franchise) and Fawn Veerasunthorn (Raya and the Last Dragon) are directors, with Peter Del Vecho (Frozen franchise) producing and Juan Pablo Reyes (Encanto) co-producing. Allison Moore (Night Sky, Manhunt) is also a co-writer. Original songs are by Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Julia Michaels and Grammy winning producer-songwriter-musician Benjamin Rice, plus score by Dave Metzger.
Pine is represented by John Carrabino Management, CAA and SBV Talent Agency.

Rebecca Rubin Film and Media Reporter Have you ever wondered how the Wishing Star, the one that so many Disney characters wished upon, came to be? Well, the Magic Kingdom attempts to explain that eternal question in its newest animated musical, “Wish.” “West Side Story” Oscar winner Ariana DeBose voices the main character Asha, who, along with her helpful goat named Valentino, finds out one day that their wishes can literally come true. The film is set in the fantastical kingdom of Rosas, which is ruled over by a king voiced by Chris Pine. Disney, once the gold standard of family films thanks to Pixar and Disney Animation, has recently struggled to score at the box office with its animated offerings. “Encanto,” which was released earlier in the pandemic, was a modest hit given the circumstances, but other releases, like “Lightyear” and “Strange World,” massively flopped in theaters and lost money for the studio. So, Disney needs “Wish” to connect with kids and their parents when the film debuts in theaters on Nov. 22.

Brent Lang Executive Editor Christopher Nolan took the stage at CinemaCon on Wednesday to unveil dramatic new footage from “Oppenheimer,” his sweeping look at the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American theoretical physicist who helped create the atomic bomb. Nolan, who has been a big advocate for the big screen and a critic of streaming, took the stage to huge applause from the crowd of movie theater owners. “I know of no more dramatic tale with higher stakes,” Nolan said of his latest opus. And boy did the film look nail-biting, as Oppenheimer creates a bomb with the potential to lead to unbelievable loss of life and destruction. There were scenes of the physicists team engaged in the top-secret work of bomb-making, but the movie also spins forward in time to a point where Russia has developed its atomic technology, triggering suspicions of espionage at Los Alamos. Nolan said that the film’s protagonist made decisions that still reverberate to this day.
