Disney revealed on Monday that its musical animated feature Wish, starring Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) and Chris Pine (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves) garnered 13.2 million views globally in its first five days streaming on Disney+.

But that demo, Lee says, “defined the whole movie; it became our North Star.” Celebrating 100 years of storytelling at Disney, “Wish” pays homage to the celestial entity so many have wished upon. Ariana DeBose voices Asha, its main protagonist and heroine, a 17-year-old who lives in the magical kingdom of Rosas, ruled by Disney’s newest villain, King Magnifico, voiced by Chris Pine.

“Mary Poppins” and “Peter Pan,” the reason being that it’s a nostalgia trip for the studio’s 100th anniversary. Well, as far as birthday celebrations go, “Wish” is about as special as throwing your “I’m a century old!” bash at a rest-stop Arby’s.Will young kids enjoy themselves? Of course.

CinemaCon earlier this week, Disney has released the first trailer for its new original musical-comedy film “Wish” online for all to see. Set in the fictional world of Rosas, the film tells the origin story behind Disney’s iconic “wishing star” and follows a 17-year-old girl named Asha (Ariana DeBose) who makes a wish so hard, it literally conjures the wishing star to life.Together, Asha and Star confront the ruler of Rosas, King Magnifico (Chris Pine), to save Asha’s community “and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars, wondrous things can happen.”Chris Buck (“Frozen”) directs the film alongside Fawn Veerasunthorn (“Raya and the Last Dragon”) from a screenplay by Jennifer Lee (“Frozen”) and Allison Moore (“Manhunt”).“Our heroine, Asha, lives in Rosas, known as the kingdom of wishes,” said Buck in a statement.

Disney distribution boss Tony Chambers said Wednesday during the studio’s CinemaCon presentation that Dungeons and Dragons and Star Trek star Chris Pine will voice King Magnifico in Walt Disney Animation Studios’ new musical comedy Wish.

News that the “Star Trek” star will add his dulcet tones to the family film came at CinemaCon. Pine most recently appeared in “Don’t Worry Darling” and “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.” His credits include “Jack Ryan,” “Into the Woods,” “Hell or High Water” and “Wonder Woman.” “Wish” is written by Jennifer Lee and directed by Chris Buck and Fawn Veerasunthorn. The film revolves around an intriguing, slightly meta question: How did the wishing star, which so many Disney characters wished upon, come into the cosmos. The film unfolds in the magical kingdom of Rosas and introduces Asha, an optimist with a sharp wit who deeply cares about her community. When Asha turns to the sky in a moment of need and makes a wish, her plea is answered by a little ball of energy called Star. Together, they team up to save Asha’s community.
