"So, firstly, if you live round the Chorlton area - warn your kids. Secondly... do you have a used iPhone you want to sell?"
Matty, who is also a food writer and hosts a podcast about Manchester's food and drink spots, said the incident had been reported to Greater Manchester Police.
"My son got to the tram stop and reported it to the Metrolink transport lot, who said they had already seen the three youths on the platform earlier in their balaclavas," he added.
"They [Metrolink staff] let him on for free as he pays with his phone usually and they then sat with him until he got home. Well done Metrolink."
