After almost four decades on the BBC medical drama Casualty, Derek Thompson’s final scenes as Charlie Fairhead were aired on Saturday 16 March and fans were emotional to say the least. During the episode on Saturday 9 March, Charlie was stabbed by a patient (played by Hollyoaks actor Angus Castle-Doughty). And viewers were left fearing soap icon, Charlie, would be killed off as his life was left hanging in the balance.
Charlie was discovered by Stevie Nash who had to fight to save his life - and to everyone’s surprise, she did.
The incident however did prompt Charlie to hang up his nurse’s uniform. He said: "I thought I was a goner," before adding: "I'm going to retire." Charlie’s exit saw the return of other iconic characters like paramedic Josh Griffiths (Ian Bleasdale) and Zoe Hanna (Sunetra Sarker). He went for a final drink with his colleagues before they surprised him with his yellow vintage Volkswagen Beetle.
Speaking to the OK!, Derek said his final scenes were on of the biggest moments in his life "like the birth of a child or your wedding." During Derek’s final episode, Casualty fans watched a number of flashbacks while Charlie remained in critical condition. It saw a younger Charlie showing up hungover to Shirley Baldwin’s (Annette Badland) retirement party where she gave him some key advice. Soon after, a nail bomb explosion fills the hospital with casualties and viewers saw Charlie responding to a challenging day at work while also revealing a hidden connection between him and Stevie.
