Discount retailer B&M has set up shop in the old Wilko premises on Cotton Street, with the firm claiming the opening has created more than 50 jobs in the process.
And the new employees weren’t the only people to benefit from the opening, with representatives from Stepping Stones Community Larder and Foodbank given the VIP treatment as they cut the ribbon.
They were chosen after staff at the store were asked to nominate a local charity for all the work they do for the local community.
As well as unveiling the new store, the charity will also receive £250 worth of B&M vouchers.
Store manager, Shona Wilson, said: “It was really exciting to welcome customers through the doors, the feedback so far has been fantastic.
“Stepping Stones Foodbank really stood out for us, so we wanted to give them some VIP treatment as a thank you for all the hard work that they have done.
“We hope that our donation can help them to continue the great work they do.”
