Brent Lang Executive Editor Writer and director He Shuming has signed with Sugar23, the multimedia and management company founded by Oscar-winning producer, manager and entrepreneur Michael Sugar. The signing comes following He’s breakout debut feature “Ajoomma,” about a widow obsessed with Korean soap operas who travels abroad for the first time to Seoul, finding more than she had bargained for in the process. That movie collected several nominations and prizes on the film festival circuit. It premiered at the 2022 Busan International Film Festival in the New Currents section; was nominated at the Palm Springs International Film Festival for the FIPRESCI Prize for Best International Film; received four nominations at the Golden Horse Awards in Taipei, including Best New Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Leading Actress and Best Supporting Actor; and won the Film AIUla Audience Award for Best Film at the Red Sea International Film Festival.

Naman Ramachandran Northern Irish writing-directing duo Adam Patterson and Declan Lawn have signed with WME for representation in the U.S. The pair’s latest work, precinct drama “Blue Lights,” for the BBC and Two Cities Television, will premiere March 27. It follows the lives of rookie police officers working in contemporary Belfast. The creative team, who started out in investigative journalism, entered the TV drama world with their original series “The Salisbury Poisonings,” about the Novichok poisonings in the U.K. in 2018. The show starred Rafe Spall and Anne Marie Duff and was the BBC’s highest rated drama of 2020. It scored nominations at the Broadcasting Press Guild Awards, Irish Film and Television Awards (IFTAs and Royal Television Society Awards.

‘Furies’ Review: A Furious Tale of Female Revenge Set in a Hell-on-Earth Vision of Ho Chi Minh City

Richard Kuipers The third feature directed by Vietnamese superstar Ngo Thanh Van — better known to western audiences as actor Veronica Ngo in “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and “The Old Guard” — lives up to its title with a furious display of female revenge set in the seedy streets of late-’90s Ho Chi Minh City. Despite a routine plot and some abrasive tonal shifts, this tale of a motherly mentor turning three damaged young women into deadly assassins is packed with exciting action and boasts fine performances from four killers bound by blood, bullets and all manner of deadly weapons. Following a series of rowdy screenings in SXSW’s Midnighters section, “Furies” will stream worldwide as the first Vietnamese Netflix original feature on March 23.

News of Jonsson signing with CAA comes just hours after the actor was confirmed to be part of the cast of the yet-to-be-titled “Alien” movie, written and directed by Fede Alvarez. 20th Century Studios announced that Jonsson would be among the actors joining Cailee Spaeny in the sci-fi film — the ninth in the franchise started by Ridley Scott, who is returning to produce. CAA Signs ‘Rye Lane’ Star Vivian Oparah (EXCLUSIVE)

Angelique Jackson British actor Vivian Oparah has signed with CAA. Best known for playing Tanya Adeola in the “Doctor Who” spinoff “Class,” Oparah currently stars in the forthcoming rom-com “Rye Lane,” which premiered in January at the Sundance Film Festival. In the film, Oparah stars as Yas, while David Jonsson (“Industry”) plays Dom, two twenty-somethings reeling from bad break-ups who connect over the course of an eventful day in South London. (The film gets its title from the real-life Rye Lane in Peckham.) The rom-com follows the pair as they “help each other deal with their nightmare exes, potentially restoring their faith in romance.” The Searchlight Pictures movie is directed by Raine Allen Miller, in her feature debut, from a screenplay by Nathan Bryon and Tom Melia. “Rye Lane” will be released on March 31 via Hulu in the U.S. and on Star internationally.
