Brits could have to fork out hundreds of pounds this Christmas by making a simple mistake in the kitchen. Plumbing experts have warned people not to tip certain leftovers down the drain - or risk a hefty repair bill.
Baileys and similar cream-based liqueurs could 'wreak havoc' with the pipes under your sink and cause serious blockages. Although these types of drinks last for around six months once opened, it's standard practice to empty the final few dregs down the drain before recycling the empty bottle.
It's not just drinks, but hot cooking fat, oils and sauces could also damage the pipes under the kitchen sink. Kevin Began, director at Blockbuster Drainage, explained exactly how.

He said: “[It] will collate in the ‘U’ bend under the sink due to its thick consistency and prevent liquid from passing through to the external drainage. He added: “No one likes a nasty surprise over the festive season and a blocked drain is no different."
Brits are already strapped for cash this time of year - and certainly won't want to risk an unexpected bill on top of their already-mounting outgoings. According to CheckATrade, it could cost between £75 and £280 for a plumber to come over and unblock your drains. Over the festive period, an emergency call-out could set you back even more.
So, how should you dispose of your unwanted liquids and leftovers this Christmas? Kevin recommends cooling down the content - if needed - and sealing it in a container. Then simply pop it in your general waste bin.
