A woman who lost both of her parents in the space of a year said she was in 'shock' after discovering her father's killer will serve just over five years in jail. Jonathan Langston, 52, was killed when he was hit by a VW Golf being driven by 28-year-old Adeel Safdar.

Their funerals were held on the same date, a year apart. Safdar, who pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving, was sentenced to eight years in prison.

At the sentencing hearing, Judge Nicholas Dean KC, the Honorary Recorder of Manchester, said he’d arrived at his eight year sentence after finding the case was in the most serious category of the sentencing guidelines, giving a starting point of 14 years in prison if Safdar had pursued the case to trial. Judge Dean said he reduced the sentence to 12 years for Safdar’s remorse and ‘good
