Blumhouse Is Getting Into the Video Game Business – and They’ll Bring James Wan’s Atomic Monster With Them

Jordan Moreau SPOILER ALERT: This contains spoilers from the Season 1 finale of “The Last of Us,” now streaming on HBO Max. “The Last of Us” was officially renewed for a Season 2 by HBO in January, but the creators are planning “more than one season” to tell the much larger story from the video game’s sequel, “The Last of Us: Part II.” Released on the PlayStation 4 in 2020, seven years after the original game debuted, “The Last of Us: Part II” tells a bigger, more complex story than its predecessor. There are many more characters, flashbacks and action set pieces, and the creators of the HBO adaptation, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, confirmed to GQ that the events of “Part II” will span more than one season.

The California Film Commission announced the latest round of credit allocations, totaling $81.7 million for 24 projects. The commission stated that “Michael” will generate $120 million in “qualified” in-state spending, which is more than any other project in the 14-year history of the tax credit program. The project was announced in January, with Jackson’s nephew Jaafar in the lead role. John Branca and John McClain, the executors of the Jackson estate, are producing with Graham King.

The media company on Tuesday announced the launch of Blumhouse Games, a new subsidiary that will produce and publish “indie-budget” video games (below $10 million) to “enable innovation and pushing creative boundaries” that is “in the spirit of its film business.” The company has appointed veteran video-game producer Zach Wood (above left) as president and ex-PlayStation exec Don Sechler (above right) as CFO of the new venture. Blumhouse Games will partner with independent game developers to bring their creative vision to life via original, horror-themed games for console, PC and mobile audiences.
