A by-election to elect a new MP for Blackpool South will be held on the same day as the local elections.
Voters in the Lancashire constituency will get to have their say on who represents them in Parliament, choosing from nine candidates.
The by-election is being held after former Conservative MP Scott Benton resigned from his post in the wake of a lobbying scandal earlier this year. In February, Mr Benton was suspended from the House of Commons for 35 days for breaching Commons rules after he was filmed by The Times offering to lobby ministers and table parliamentary questions on behalf of gambling investors.

Mr Benton, who won the seat in December 2019 with a majority of 3,690, announced in March that he would quit Parliament rather than wait for the outcome of a recall petition. After the allegations surfaced, he was stripped of the Tory whip and sat as an independent.
Labour's candidate Chris Webb has been tipped to gain the marginal seat, which would be the Tories’ 11th such defeat so far this parliament. The result of the Blackpool South by-election is likely to be among the first to be declared overnight after the polls close on Thursday, May 2, at 10pm.
Blackpool South had previously been held by the Conservatives for decades after its creation in 1945 - right up until 1997 when Labour won it. Mr Benton defeated the incumbent Labour MP Gordon Marsden in the general election held in December 2019.
