A Scottish bar has been crowned as one of the top 50 in the world, while another has been named as having the best cocktail menu around the globe.
The World’s 50 Best Bars 2023 were announced on Tuesday night at a ceremony in Singapore, with bars from 28 different cities being included in the prestigious list.
Panda & Sons in Edinburgh is the only Scottish bar to feature in the top 50, coming in at number 39. The speakeasy-inspired bar located on Queen Street in the capital is also one of just six in the UK to be included — with the other five all based in London.
Panda & Sons' owner Iain McPherson was joined on stage by coworkers Nicky Craig and Sean Moggach to accept the esteemed award. Mr McPherson was previously named as Bar Innovator of the Year by the Class Bar Awards earlier this year.
Meanwhile, the American Bar at the iconic Gleneagles hotel near Auchterarder received the Siete Misterios Best Cocktail Menu award for its Book of Berries menu.
Inspired by 20th-century 'observer books', the menu features 18 cocktails that are each dedicated to a single botanical berry sourced from the local Perthshire hills.
The list of the 50 best bars was compiled by votes from The World’s 50 Best Bars Academy, which "comprises 680 drinks experts with 50/50 gender parity". The experts, which includes esteemed bartenders, consultants, drinks writers, and cocktail specialists from around the world, each submitted seven votes based on their best bar experiences across the previous 18 months.

The recent passing of Terence Davies and the tributes that followed — tales of a steel will, impassioned budgetary battles and a host of dream projects that never materialized — give this highly personal tribute to Scottish filmmaker Bill Douglas an extra and very poignant relevance as a similar story, now depressingly familiar to the British film industry, of an uncompromising talent who left us with a tantalizing promise of what might have been. Now largely unknown to the wider world, but very dear to the heart of Scotland (despite the fact that he left his homeland at the earliest opportunity), Douglas is the closest thing to a Rosetta Stone in recent British independent and social-realist cinema. From his early home movies through to his last three-hour masterwork Comrades (1986), the director left an indelible imprint that still seems shockingly modern today, leaving traces in everything from Derek Jarman’s early Super-8 works to Lynne Ramsay’s Ratcatcher and beyond.
