The BBC has confirmed that from tomorrow, Monday April 8, it will finally shut down its iPlayer Downloads app for good, affecting a raft of devices in the process.
The decision to decommission the telly viewing tool, which was announced back in February, follows declining user numbers and prohibitive maintenance costs.
"We have made the difficult decision to close the BBC iPlayer Downloads application for PC and Mac, due to the low number of people using it and the cost required to keep it going," wrote the tech team at the BBC on their official website.
It hasn't been an overnight operation with the closure process having been filtered through over several months. Initially, in February, the corporation ceased any new installations of the app onto PC platforms.
Then last month, users began being denied access to fresh content or downloading shows to their hard drives. Now, with the definitive switch-off, all remaining downloads are blocked from playback as the app finally shuts its digital doors.
It's important to note that this doesn't prevent PC users from viewing shows via web browsers - the restriction is only on the specific application, reports the Mirror. Equally, it doesn't impact on mobile usage of the service.
"This does not affect downloads on the BBC iPlayer mobile or tablet apps, and viewers can continue to stream programmes on BBC iPlayer on their PCs and Macs," clarified a spokesperson from the national broadcaster.
Below is the full list of devices impacted by the change:
