Iconic British medical drama Casualty has been a favourite for UK viewers since it first aired. Derek Thompson, who played Charlie from the start, is set to leave in scenes that will air later this year.
The show's original cast made a big impact, but where are they now? Let's take a look at what some of the stars are up to now... Derek Thompson Derek Thompson, who plays Charlie Fairhead in Casualty, is the longest-serving cast member of the show.
He's been in all 32 series and was even celebrated during the 30th-anniversary celebrations. Derek's portrayal of Charlie has earned him critical acclaim and several award nominations. In July 2017, it was revealed that he was the BBC's highest-paid actor, earning between £350,000 and £400,000 over the last financial year.
However, in June 2023, it was announced that after 37 years, Thompson would be leaving Casualty; his exit will air in 2024. Cathy Shipton Cathy Shipton, who played the beloved character Lisa "Duffy" Duffin in Casualty, has been a fan favourite for her empathetic and resilient portrayal. Duffy was a dependable nurse in the first eight series of the BBC medical drama, and after leaving in 1993, she returned in 1998 for a five-year stint, which included a guest appearance in Holby City.
Cathy has also used her platform to support healthcare and raise awareness for important causes like the British Heart Foundation. She reprised her role as Duffy for two episodes in 2006 for the show's twentieth anniversary, and again in 2015. In June 2016, it was announced that she would appear in the show's thousandth episode, before returning as a regular cast member in August.
