All indicators are, particularly with the potency and popularity of this year’s Best Picture contenders, and most notably the dual phenomenon of summer blockbusters Barbie and front-runner Oppenheimer (aka Barbenheimer) which have 21 nominations between them, that this could be a banner year for the Oscars as there is nothing more encouraging ratings-wise, as host Jimmy Kimmel told me earlier this week, than doing a show where viewers have actually seen the movies and have a rooting interest in the outcome. Creating Lisbon proved to be one of the biggest jobs for cinematographer Robbie Ryan and even Lanthimos. As Emma Stone’s Bella Baxter departs her black-and-white world of Victorian-era London and Godwin’s (Willem Dafoe’s) home, the movie transitions into a pastel-colored world — there’s a soundstage with a water tank for the scenic sea view, and a giant picturesque backdrop.

The BRIT Awards 2024 have announced details of a partnership with No Music On A Dead Planet to further their commitment to environmental sustainability, NME can exclusively announce.The move is part of the BRITs “long-term vision” to “constantly review, innovate and adapt to deliver the awards’ sustainability goals”. As a result, the awards will be teaming up the climate action group Music Declares Emergency to launch the first public call to action for their global No Music On A Dead Planet campaign.

“There are some replications in things and specific references, where it’s almost like Easter eggs for the fans, but they’re not really the same,” says costume designer Jacqueline Durran. Rather than creating large scale versions of existing outfits, Durran says she used them as inspiration for entirely new designs. “The main thing I wanted to happen is that I wanted Barbie fans to go to the movie and recognize Barbie as the Barbie they loved.” Below, Durran gives insight into the how her designs were conceived to give Barbie the perfect outfit for every occasion and creating a unique look for Ken.
