It is crunch time for Raj Kapoor, Katy Mullan, and Molly McNearney, the three Executive Producers of the 96th Annual Academy Awards as they are putting final touches in place for what they hope will be a show that honors not just this year’s crop of movies, but also Hollywood’s and Oscar’s rich past history, and a ceremony that excites viewers to the point of keeping the recent post-pandemic ratings rise rising, (ie not going in the wrong direction). All indicators are, particularly with the potency and popularity of this year’s Best Picture contenders, and most notably the dual phenomenon of summer blockbusters Barbie and front-runner Oppenheimer (aka Barbenheimer) which have 21 nominations between them, that this could be a banner year for the Oscars as there is nothing more encouraging ratings-wise, as host Jimmy Kimmel told me earlier this week, than doing a show where viewers have actually seen the movies and have a rooting interest in the outcome. Ratings for other awards shows (save for the dreary numbers the strike-delayed Emmys got) have been upbeat including the revitalized Golden Globes on CBS, Critics Choice Awards on The CW, and the Grammys which also had a Barbie factor with its Song Of The Year winner from Billie Eilish, “What Was I Made For”.
To that end, and to boost the numbers watching at home, the Academy for the first time is going an hour earlier, cutting their red carpet pre-show down to just a half hour, and starting the actual Oscar show at 4pm PT/7pm ET with plans for a 3 1/2 hour broadcast. The hope is this will have the effect of ending the show, particularly on the East Coast, much sooner and still in prime time when the big awards are being announced. In the past bloated running times have

Zack Sharf Digital News Director Jimmy Kimmel kicked off the March 18 episode of his ABC talk show by telling viewers that Donald Trump is “still stewing about a joke I made about him at the Oscars.” Kimmel hosted the 2024 Academy Awards and stopped the show right before the best picture category was announced to read aloud Trump’s criticism of the ceremony. Trump posted on Truth Social during the Oscars and called Kimmel a bad host. “Well, thank you, President Trump,” Kimmel fired back.
Flavor Flav and Billie Eilish now have matching custom Barbie clock necklaces with their names on them. On Sunday, the famous rapper and reality star walked the Vanity Fair red carpet with a pink custom Barbie clock necklace with his name on it.
It wouldn’t be an Academy Award ceremony without some controversy. While Emma Stone’s (“Poor Things”) Best Actress win over Lily Gladstone (“Killers Of The Flower Moon”) caused a lot of drama over social media, one of the biggest blunders—or what some suspected to be one— was around the presentation of The Best Picture award.
Addie Morfoot Contributor In January, prolific songwriter Diane Warren received her 15th Academy Award nomination in the best song category for “The Fire Inside,” for the film “Flamin’ Hot,” directed by Eva Longoria. On March 10, Warren held onto her Oscar record in the category for more nominations without a single win when she lost to Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell for their “Barbie” song “What Was I Made For?” But Warren doesn’t have much time to wallow in self pity.
Billie Eilish proved her talent and staying power at the 2024 Oscars when she walked away with the Best Original Song trophy. The singer-songwriter had won the prize in the past, and with a second honor to her credit, she’s made history. The superstar and her brother Finneas were named the champions in the Best Original Song category for their single “What Was I Made For?” from the movie Barbie.Eilish and Finneas now stand as the two youngest two-time Oscar winners in the almost-century-long history of the ceremony. Eilish is just 22 years old, while her brother is 26.Eilish and Finneas earned their first Oscar in 2021 for “No Time to Die,” the title song from the James Bond film of the same name.
Zack Sharf Digital News Director Al Pacino has issued a statement amid questions surrounding his appearance during the 2024 Oscars ceremony, where he awkwardly presented the best picture category. Pacino, who won an Academy Award for best actor in “Scent of a Woman,” did not list any of this year’s 10 nominees for best picture.
As the Oscar ceremony was running a little short, Jimmy Kimmel said that he was told not to read Donald Trump‘s Truth Social post on the air, but he did so anyway.
“I’m Just Ken” might actually win Best Original Song over “What Was I Made For?” — Billie Eilish’s far superior “Barbie” tune. After all, another Oscar win would make Eilish, 22, and her producer brother, Finneas, 26, the youngest two-time Academy Award winners in history after their victory in 2022 for the Bond theme song “No Time To Die.”Perhaps with some voters thinking “too much, too soon,” an upset seemed to be brewing. But now the siblings are in the history books — as they should be.Sometimes it’s just as simple as real recognizing real — whether it’s at the Oscars or the Grammys. And when Eilish got a standing O from Hollywood’s finest after performing “What Was I Made For?” at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on Sunday night, it was an acknowledgement of just how far ahead she was of the other Best Original Song nominees. To be honest, it wasn’t even as hauntingly heartbreaking as her performance of the tune just before it took Song of the Year at the Grammys last month. But it was still real artistry on raw display that was all the chills and feels.“What Was I Made For?” also became only the 10th song in history to win both the Grammy for Song of the Year and the Oscar for Best Original Song. That puts it in some pretty prestigious company, with the likes of “Moon River” (from 1961’s “Breakfast at Tiffany’s”) “The Way We Were” (from 1973’s “The Way We Were”), “Evergreen” (from 1976’s “A Star Is Born”), “You Light Up My Life” (from 1977’s “You Light Up My Life”), “A Whole New World” (from 1992’s “Aladdin”) and “My Heart Will Go On” (from 1997’s “Titanic”).Bravo, Billie and Finneas.
Billie Eilish (22) and Finneas O’Connell (26) made history on Sunday night at the Oscars as they became the youngest two-time winners ever, taking home the golden statue for the somber Barbie hit “What Was I Made For?” in the Original Song category.
Looks like fourth time is truly a charm for Jimmy Kimmel and the Academy Awards.
Oscars 2024 is taking place tonight (March 10) in Los Angeles, with Oppenheimer, Poor Things, and Killers Of The Flower Moon set to battle it out for the top gongs. The ceremony will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood and will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel for a fourth time.Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer leads the nominations going into the event with 13 nods, including Best Director, Best Picture and Best Actor. Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things follows on 11, while Martin Scorsese’s Killers Of The Flower Moon is in the running in 10 categories.
Ryan Gosling’s rendition of Matchbox Twenty’s “Push” was, well, no match for his live rendition of “I’m Just Ken” at the 2024 Oscars. Gosling, 43, joined Mark Ronson, 48, (who also produced Dua Lipa’s “Barbie” hit “Dance the Night”) onstage at the Dolby Theatre in LA on Sunday — with an epic surprise appearance by guitar legend Slash. Dressed in a bedazzled Barbie pink suit, Gosling started his performance from the audience, behind Margot Robbie, who chuckled at his dramatics.
