‘Barbie’ Leads UK Home Entertainment Charts
Greta Gerwig’s Barbie topped the UK’s home entertainment charts in 2023 with 700k sales across platforms, according to figures released by the British Association for Screen Entertainment (BASE) and Official Charts Company (OCC). The figures state the value of the UK Home Entertainment Category rose to £4.9bn in 2023. The rise was driven by the ongoing surge in consumer uptake of subscription services, with over 56 million subscriptions in 2023, a 5.4% year-on-year rise. Elsewhere in the report, BASE and OCC said Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer was the biggest release on Blu-ray in the UK in 2023, with a value of £1.1m15 on Blu-ray alone.

The UK-based Association of Motion Picture Sound (AMPS) has announced the nominees for its 2024 Excellence In Sound awards. The list of nominees includes Barbie (Warner Bros), Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, (Paramount), Oppenheimer (Universal), Saltburn (Amazon), and The Zone Of Interest (A24). Final voting will start on 15 January and close on 25 January. In addition to Supervising crew members, AMPS honors Key 1st Assistant Sound/(Boom Operators) and Supervising Dialogue/ADR Editors. “The nominees showcase a remarkable blend of creativity and technical mastery. These exceptional films highlight the varied and dynamic landscape of the craft of sound in film, each presents distinct audio demands executed to a fantastic degree, making the decision for AMPS voters a truly challenging one,” said AMPS Chair Andrew Wilson.

Studios, specialty labels, streamers and indies spread the field of BAFTA Film Awards nominations announced today. Universal‘s Oppenheimer leads with 13, followed by Searchlight‘s Poor Things at 11 and Apple Original Films‘ Killers of the Flower Moon at nine, tying with A24’s The Zone of Interest.
Oppenheimer leading the way with no less than 13 nominations, including best film. Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things is a close second with 11 nods, and then Killers of the Flower Moon and The Zone of Interest which both bagged 9.

The JITC Hollywood Bureau for Jewish Representation — “The first and only Jewish Hollywood bureau,” launched in 2021 and founded by Allison Josephs — has sent a letter to the Motion Picture Academy claiming that its inclusion policy “erases Jewish peoplehood and perpetuates myths of Jewish whiteness, power, and that racism against Jews is not a major issue or that it’s a thing of the past.”The letter has been signed by more than over 200 people, including David Schwimmer, Tiffany Haddish, Julianna Margulies, Michael Rapaport, Debra Messing, Ginnifer Goodwin and Marta Kauffman.In August, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences amended its “Representation and Inclusion Standards” for the 96th Oscars Awards Show, airing March 10 on ABC.Regarding lead actors or “significant supporting actors from underrepresented racial or ethnic groups,” the academy included, among others, African American/Black/African and/or Caribbean descent; East Asian; Hispanic or Latina/e/o/x; Indigenous Peoples; Middle Eastern/North African; and Southeast Asian.“Jewish people being excluded from the Motion Picture Academy’s Representation and Inclusion Standards is discriminating against a protected class by invalidating their historic and genetic identity,” the letter states.“This must be addressed immediately by including Jews in the Motion Picture Academy’s Representation and Inclusion Standards.”Other signees of the letter include Bret Gelman, Iliza Schlesinger, Elon Gold, Josh Dallas, Emanuelle Chriqui and Mark Feuerstein.“While many mistakenly believe that Judaism is only a religion, Jews are actually an ethnic group, with a varied spiritual practice that not all observe,” the letter says.
