Mould is unfortunately all too common in UK households and this is especially true during the colder seasons.
The fungus is a by-product from damp and condensation, which thrive in warm homes. While this is usually remedied with keeping windows open to ensure proper ventilation, this isn't really an option in chilly weather.
Luckily, there is an easy cheap way you can keep the spores out of your home, according to one expert. Jamie Jones, founder of Open Space Concepts has explained how placing some plastic over windows could lower energy use, prevent damp and mould and even boost health.
He said: “When it comes to mould, remember that prevention is key. It’s important to stay observant and address any signs of moisture or mould growth quickly so that, with proper maintenance, you can keep it at bay and create a healthier environment for yourself and your family.”
If left to flourish, mould can lead to structural damage and even health problems especially in those with existing breathing problems. Rather than splash out on costly dehumidifiers to tackle the problem, simply placing some plastic materiel over windows "is one of the best and most simple ways" to keep mould at bay, according to Jamie.
He explained: "It is a cost-effective method that acts as insulation, minimising heat loss in colder months. The plastic also acts as a barrier against drafts, keeping cold air out and preventing warm air from escaping, causing rooms to feel warmer and ultimately lowering energy bills. This is especially beneficial for older or poorly insulated windows."
The plastic material works by trapping air between it and the window, preventing the build-up of condensation, keeping homes dry. While you can use any plastic, such as cling film or
