Todd Spangler NY Digital Editor UPDATE, 3/8, 1:15 p.m. ET: In an about-face, Apple restored Epic Games‘ developer account for Sweden, two days after terminating it over what the tech giant said was Epic’s “egregious breach of its contractual obligations to Apple.” Epic said Apple’s reversal will allow it proceed with plans to launch battle-royale game “Fortnite” and the Epic Games Store in European countries.
Epic, in an update Friday, said, “Apple has told us and committed to the European Commission that they will reinstate our developer account. This sends a strong signal to developers that the European Commission will act swiftly to enforce the Digital Markets Act and hold gatekeepers accountable.
We are moving forward as planned to launch the Epic Games Store and bring Fortnite back to iOS in Europe. Onward! An Apple rep said in a statement to Variety, “Following conversations with Epic, they have committed to follow the rules, including our DMA policies.
As a result, Epic Sweden AB has been permitted to re-sign the developer agreement and accepted into the Apple Developer Program.” Epic CEO Tim Sweeney wrote in a post on X that the situation was the “first major victory” for the EU’s Digital Markets Act, a new law regulating big tech “gatekeeper” companies like Apple, which took full effect March 6. “The DMA went through its first major challenge with Apple banning Epic Games Sweden from competing with the App Store, and the DMA just had its first major victory,” Sweeney wrote.
