Residents have expressed anger about a south Manchester road that they say is plagued with dangerous drivers. People living in Whalley Range have said they are 'worried' about the risk posed by motorists using Wilbraham Road.
Wilbraham Road (A6010) runs between Fallowfield and Chorlton. The stretch of road is around three miles long, but the first speed camera doesn't appear until shortly past the junction where Wilbraham Road becomes Edge Lane, near Stretford. The speed limit along the entire stretch is 30mph.
The road has seen numerous incidents over the years. Footage of the latest smash, shared with the Manchester Evening News, shows the moment the driver of a BMW narrowly missed a pedestrian and ploughed into a lamppost outside Whalley Range High School. The crash caused the road to be closed on Tuesday afternoon (February 14) with police hunting the driver after they fled the scene.
Police later confirmed they arrested a man, aged 27, on suspicion of driving with no licence or insurance. He was also arrested on suspicion of careless driving, theft of a motor vehicle, aggravated vehicle taking without consent, and for failing to stop, and is in custody.
Emergency services also swarmed the road last year, on August 28. Two cyclists were rushed to hospital with serious injuries following a collision. One of the cyclists later died.
Back in 2016, three men, who were passengers inside a car, died after the white Audi A5 careered into a lamppost, also outside Whalley Range High School. A man was jailed for six years following the crash.
