Andy Burnham has described Andrew Malkinson's wrongful conviction and jail term as a 'terrible miscarriage of justice'.
The Greater Manchester mayor said he will raise the 'very, very serious issues' surrounding Greater Manchester Police's involvement in the case of the 57-year-old, who spent 17 years behind bars for a rape that he didn't commit. Mr Malkinson had always denied carrying out the violent attack on a woman by the M61 motorway in Little Hulton in July 2003.
He was jailed for life with a minimum term of seven years but remained in prison for a further 10 because he maintained he was innocent. His conviction was quashed by senior judges at the Court of Appeal on Wednesday after DNA evidence linking another man to the crime came to light.

Mr Burnham said he 'could not help but feel deeply for Andrew Malkinson and his family and friends'. He said issues will now be raised surrounding both the police force and the criminal justice system.
Asked on Sky News today (Thursday) about how concerned he was on GMP's role in the case, he said: "There are very very serious issues, this is a terrible miscarriage of justice.
"Of course, it relates to a period 20 years ago, so that means that it is under a previous regime but it is not to minimise in any way the scale of these issues and you cannot help but feel deeply for Andrew Malkinson and his family and friends.
"But also the victim concerned, we must keep her in our thoughts in as well. But there are massive issues arising here, both in Greater Manchester Police and I believe as well though criminal justice system.
