The sight of the newly renovated former Ancoats Hospital has been met with joy. The hospital, which had stood an empty ruin on Old Mill Street for more than 30 years, came close to being pulled down in 2011.
It had been slated for demolition, prompting a backlash from conservationists and activists who formed the Ancoats Dispensary Trust.
It was the start of a seven-year battle to save the former dispensary, with the trust taking it over - before they were dealt a blow when a bid to secure the money they needed to restore it was rejected by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The Neo-Gothic Victorian gem was handed back to Manchester City Council. However, in May 2021, the council, in partnership with developer Great Places, drew up plans to redevelop what remains of the Grade II listed former dispensary into affordable one and two bed apartments to rent.
The redevelopment aimed to retain as much of the original façade - including its iconic tower - as possible, while replacing the unsafe parts of the structure with a new modern building.

Ancoats Dispensary was founded in 1828 as a charity distributing medicines to the people of Ancoats, at the time, was densely populated, heavily industrialised and poor. Accidents and infectious diseases were rife, and, by 1833, the dispensary had treated over 13,000 people.
