Alexander Armstrong highlighted an X-rated Celtic fans’ chat at the Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden during on BBC programme 'Have I Got News For You' when discussing the coronation of King Charles.
The Pointless presenter was appearing on the satirical comedy show as a guest host when he played a clip of the Hoops legions chanting “You can shove your coronation up your a****”. People watching the coronation on Saturday will be invited to join a "chorus of millions" to swear allegiance to the King and his heirs, organisers say, which received an angry response from the Parkhead support who travelled to the national stadium.
Piers Morgan was among those to take aim at Celtic fans over their anti-monarchy chants, but when Armstrong introduced the clip during the popular panel show it was met with laughs and even some applause from the studio audience. He said: “Some people aren’t happy about the oath of allegiance. There’s an anti monarchist group Republic for example.
“A spokesman said ‘In a democracy it is the head of state that should swear allegiance to us. This is an offensive and tone deaf gesture that holds the people in contempt. Or as the Celtic fans put it …You can shove your coronation up your arse.”
However, long-time panelist Ian Hislop appeared to pick up the wrong end of the stick and pronounced the club with a hard ‘c’ rather than a soft ‘c’. He said: “Once the Stone of Scone returns the Celtic fans are going to change their minds.” Armstrong quickly corrected him, saying: “They go by Celtic … just to trip you up.”
Hislop answered - quickly turning into a Rangers supporter for a brief moment: “Well just to balance things up, I’ll say I really like Ran-Gers.”
