Sorting out your boiler carefully and efficiently is all in a day’s work for Manchester-based British Gas technical engineer Joanna – but she’s also got plenty of tips on upgrading to a new one that could save you money.
And there’s plenty to save – households could shrink their gas bills by more than 20 per cent1 with an energy-efficient, modern replacement boiler. Handy!
But if you’re thinking a boiler upgrade could take an age, mean lots of mess and is too costly, don’t worry: Joanna had some good news when we asked her to share her answers to the five most common upgrade questions.
“I’ve worked for British Gas for almost 14 years and the best part of my job is that I feel like I’m helping people,” says Joanna, 43. “I arrive at houses where people feel cold and uncomfortable, but by the time I say goodbye everything is cosy and warm again. You can feel their relief and know that you helped.”
“A lot of people think that changing their boiler is going to be a really big job that will take days to complete, which puts them off getting it done. In reality, most boilers are fitted within a day and a half.
If you’re having your entire heating system replaced, then of course that’s a bigger job and will take longer. But it’s easy to arrange to have an engineer visit your home and talk you through the process before you commit to anything.”
“It’s difficult to put an exact number on this as the lifespan of different makes of boilers can vary drastically. It also comes down to a variety of factors – like how regularly it’s been serviced, for example. I’d say that if you’ve had your current boiler for 10 years or over, it’s best to have it looked at by a trusted professional and ask for their advice.”
“A lot of people say they

Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic The phone-call-with-the-killer sequence that opens every “Scream” film is always a tasty appetizer, one that as the characters in any “Scream” film could tell you establishes the tone for the movie in question. In “Scream VI,” that scene kicks off at the bar of a trendy restaurant in downtown Manhattan. The woman seated at the bar is a professor of cinema studies, blonde and British. As she says on the phone to her online date, who can’t seem to locate the restaurant, she’s teaching a course in slasher films (which, the way she explains it, is no stab in the dark of plausibility). Her date, a sweetly annoying dork, is able to talk her out onto the street to help him find the place, and by the time she’s walking into a dark alley we know what’s coming. (His voice lowers into that familiar mocking AM-radio-DJ growl.) In this case, though, the killer is instantly unmasked as…a college bro. He returns to his apartment, and moments later he’s the scary-movie victim, talking on the phone with the real killer.
