In a typical household, over half of the energy bills are spent on heating and hot water, but an inefficient boiler means not only will you be spending more than you need on energy costs, you could also end up with lukewarm radiators and a heating system that never quite works properly.
Replacing an old, uneconomical boiler with a new, energy-efficient one could save you more than 20 per cent on your gas bills. Having an efficient heating system is, says the Energy Saving Trust, “One of the most important steps you can take to reduce your fuel bills and your carbon dioxide emissions.”
We’ve asked a British Gas expert to share her insight into how we can all improve energy efficiency when it comes to our boilers. Technical engineer Joanna Flowers, from Manchester, has worked for British Gas for almost 14 years.
She says, “I think a lot of people are genuinely scared about how much they are spending on their heating, so anything I’m able to do to help them save money – or at least ensure the money they are spending is being used properly – is an important and worthwhile part of my job.
“My fellow engineers and I work locally to where we live. I often have people coming up to me in the supermarket saying, ‘Ooh you fixed my boiler!’ I went back to one customer’s house recently where I’d fitted a new boiler, and he said he couldn’t believe how much money he’s now saving and how much warmer his house feels. His previous boiler was about 30 years old, so it was desperate for an upgrade. Now he’s feeling all the benefits. That kind of feedback is really rewarding.”
Here Joanna shares her tips for ensuring boiler efficiency:
“In a nutshell, boiler efficiency is about making sure all of the fuel being used to power your system
