U2 to reportedly extend Las Vegas Sphere residency

U2 are set to extend their residency at the new Sphere venue in Las Vegas, according to reports.Held at the newly launched venue in Nevada, the Irish rock veterans became the first artist to perform at the Sphere and are currently underway with their residency which sees them perform some ‘Achtung Baby’ deep cuts for the first time in 30 years along with other classic hits. The live shows – titled ‘U2:UV Achtung Baby Live At Sphere’ – kicked off on September 29, and was scheduled to run until December 16. However, according to new reports, it seems that the band are set to be adding more dates to the residency. The speculation arose after outlets like The New York Post claimed that U2 are set to add a total of 12 more dates to the list while organisers continue to seek out other acts to take on the headline spot at the $2.3billion venue. It is not yet clear whether these 12 extra dates have been locked in or not, however, with Bono and co.

U2’s Bono pays tribute to 260 music fans killed in Israel festival attack

U2 frontman Bono has paid tribute to the 260 music fans killed during an Israel festival attack while on stage in Las Vegas. The moment took place when the Irish singer was on stage with the band as part of their ongoing Las Vegas residency – held at the new $2billion Sphere venue. Around mid-way through the set, he took time to speak to the audience and shared his condolences for the events unfolding across Israel and Palestine, stating that his prayers go out particularly to those who died at a music festival. The event he referred to is the attack launched at the Paralello Universo festival in Re’im, Israel over the weekend (Saturday, October 7), which was carried out by Hamas operatives. The electronic festival was interrupted in the early hours of Saturday morning, and reportedly saw rockets hit the site around 6:30am (via CNN) before gunfire opened up on those in attendance soon after.Earlier today (October 9), it was announced that 260 people were killed at the festival, while hundreds more remain missing.During the band’s performance at the Nevada residency last night, frontman Bono dedicated his hit 2003 song ‘Pride (In the Name of Love)’ to the victims, and shared his hopes for a non-violent solution to the conflict. In the light of what’s happened in Israel and Gaza, a song about non-violence seems somewhat ridiculous, even laughable, but our prayers have always been for peace and for non-violence…But our hearts and our anger, you know where that’s pointed.

U2 have spoken about drummer Larry Mullen Jr playing “up a storm” in the studio when recording their new single ‘Atomic City‘, despite being saddled with surgery recovery. The band, who dropped their first new song in two years today (September 29) hours before their residency at Las Vegas’ new MSG Sphere venue opens, said in a new interview that drummers – and Mullen Jr – are “a breed apart” when it comes to soldiering on.Mullen Jr last year cited damage to his “elbows, knees [and] necks”, which he “got a chance to have a look at” during the COVID pandemic. He said that he was unsure whether he’d be able to tour with U2 for the foreseeable.Due to these drumming-related injuries, which he described as “damage along the way”, Mullen said he’d “like to take some time… to get myself healed”.

But we understood the logic.

U2’s latest album ‘Songs Of Surrender’ is currently selling more copies than the rest of the Top Five in the charts combined – and fast on the way to becoming the band’s 11th Number One album.Released last Friday, the album saw the Irish rock veterans return with a series of re-recorded and re-interpreted songs from throughout their 40-year career, including fan favourites, ‘I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For’ and ‘With Or Without You’.Sharing its name with Bono’s 2022 memoir, Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story, the album is already performing extremely well on the charts and, as of yesterday, outselling the rest of the Top Five combined, according to The Official Charts Company. If it were to peak at the top position, it would mark the band’s 11th number one album, and the first to reach the summit following their 2009 LP, ‘No Line On the Horizon’. Previously, U2 have scored consecutive Top 10 entries over the past decade, with 2014’s ‘Songs Of Innocence’ and 2017’s ‘Songs of Experience’ peaking at Number Six and Number Five respectively.Additionally, their greatest hits album, ‘U218 Singles’, has also resurfaced and is on its way to reaching the Top 40 for the second time.
