‘The Dead Don’t Hurt’ Review: Viggo Mortensen Stars, Writes, Directs, Produces, And Composes Music For This Uniquely Fine Western But Vicky Krieps Is Its Soul – Toronto Film Festival

The western genre has been so pervasive throughout the entire history of the movies, and it is hard to imagine doing anything in it that hasn’t already been done. Viggo Mortensen, in writing, directing, producing, and co-starring in only his second film behind the camera (after 2020’s Falling) finds a moving, if tragic, love story to play against the stunning landscape of the circa 1860’s west, and somehow it all feels new. John Ford and Howard Hawks would love this movie.

The darkest day – celebrating devoted Queen’s amazing life and sad death, one year on

She may have been the longest-serving monarch in British royal history, but the Queen’s death on 8 September, 2022 – after a record-breaking 70 years on the throne – nonetheless came as a devastating blow to the nation. Unrealistic as it may have seemed, many of us simply thought she would go on forever. She had been a pillar of stability throughout the lives of generations of Britons – a steadying hand guiding her people during troubled times, but also a figurehead for celebration during some of our country’s most triumphant moments.

‘Ryuichi Sakamoto: Opus’ Review: The ‘Last Emperor’ Composer Gives a Glorious Final Performance

Todd Gilchrist editor To capture the breadth and depth of the musical career of Japanese composer and recording artist Ryuichi Sakamoto seems impossible, but somehow “Ryuichi Sakamoto: Opus” almost accomplishes this herculean challenge. A document of Sakamoto’s final performance before his death from cancer last march, the film provides no commentary or context for the enormity of his body of work, yet somehow encompasses it all as he performs a curated set list in a Japanese recording studio for an audience of one — himself.

‘Evil Does Not Exist’ Review: Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Tale of Rural Gentrification is a Tone Poem with an Atonal End

Jessica Kiang A wild deer with a hunter’s bullet in its belly may attack a human, no matter how mild its nature normally. This is one of the droplets of woodland wisdom dispensed by the otherwise taciturn Takumi (Hitoshi Omika), the woodcutter, water-gatherer and all-round odd-job-man of Mizubiki village, the setting of “Drive My Car” director Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s meditative and moving, yet ultimately unsettling new feature. Takumi’s few words all relate to such matters: the flow of a stream, the thorns on a Siberian Ginseng, the tang of wild wasabi.

‘Maestro’ Review: Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan Make Beautiful Music Together in Cooper’s Haunting Leonard Bernstein Biopic

Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic In “Maestro,” playing the legendary American conductor and composer Leonard Bernstein, Bradley Cooper has a light in his eye — a glow of merriment and mischief, of gleeful cosmopolitan desire. His Lenny is a prodigy, a prankster, a seducer, a monk of creative devotion and, through it all, a man of epic contradiction. In public, he tends toward the proper and stentorian; in private, he’s recklessly exuberant enough to give new — or maybe old — meaning to the word gay.
