Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large Sports journalist and former “Today” show anchor Bryant Gumbel has been selected to receive a Lifetime Achievement award at the 44th Annual Sports Emmy Awards. The event takes place on Monday, May 22, at Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Rose Hall in New York.   The honor was announced Tuesday morning by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, which administers the Sports Emmys. “Bryant has a storied career, from his start as a sportscaster in Los Angeles to five decades of celebrated work — every bit cementing him as an icon and trailblazer in sports and entertainment,” said NATAS president and CEO Adam Sharp. “Bryant‘s incredible resume spanning ‘Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel,’ NBC Sports, NBC News, CBS News, and many other projects has brought dramatic and human news and sports stories to life for audiences throughout his career making him a clear front runner for this distinct honor.”

The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences today announced the winners of the 74th annual Technology & Engineering Emmy Awards, which will be handed out in April. See the list below.

The nominations are out for the inaugural Children’s & Family Emmys, which will be handed out over two nights next month.

Presenters set to appear at the news ceremony include Linsey Davis (ABC News), Margaret Brennan (CBS News), Omar Jimenez (CNN), Morgan Radford (NBC News), Julio Vaqueiro (Noticias Telemundo), Teresa Rodrigues (Univision) and Paola Ramos (Vice News).

Michael Schneider Variety Editor at Large When the Television Academy revealed this year’s Primetime Emmy submissions in June, there were a few glaring omissions. Fans of Netflix’s young adult drama “Heartstopper” (pictured above) were particularly perplexed, until they learned that the show instead opted to vie for a trophy in the new Children’s & Family Emmy Awards run by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. With this move, the coming-of-age tale based on a graphic novel about a gay teen who falls in love with his classmate now has a better shot at winning than it would if it were still competing for a Primetime Emmy trophy. Entries were due earlier this month for the Children’s & Family Emmys, which will include around 50 categories. Some of those races have moved over from the Daytime Emmys, which New York-based NATAS also oversees, while others are new, to reflect the full scope of youth-oriented fare (including shows like “Heartstopper” that might have previously competed for the Primetime Emmy race, which is administered by the Los Angeles-based Television Academy).

The Foundation of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) announced $90K in scholarships to seven college-bound high school students pursuing careers in television.

And, by the org’s own admission, it still has some work to do on representation — particularly when it comes to the sports competition.According to its report on judging demographics, 73% of NATAS’ Sports Emmy judges are male, and 25% are female. Also, 82% of the award’s judges are white, with just 9% Black, 7% Latino and 3% Asian American.
