Police have said they believe she fell into the River Wyre in Lancashire, alongside which she was walking, but this has been strongly disputed by her loved ones. American Dr Grande PhD, who has well over a million subscribers on YouTube, said the main theories surrounding Nicola's disappearance, mainly put forward by internet detectives, included that her partner, Paul Ansell, was involved, that she ran off to start a new life, possibly with a lover, that she took her own life, that she was kidnapped and that she fell into the river and drowned.

About suggestions that Nicola simply went off to start a new life, he said: "It's exceptionally difficult to start a new life in the modern world, even with a lot of preparation.
Even if she simply ran off with a lover, communication would have been necessary to execute the plan. "He added that if Nicola was about to run off to a new life, she would not have been listening in to a Teams meeting for work via her mobile phone when she disappeared.
He also said there were also problems with the idea that she took her own life deliberately. "Completing a plan like this by walking into a river would be highly unusual, though not completely unheard of," he said.
Dr Grande also said the 10 minute timeframe would have made kidnapping Nicola difficult, but that it was still more likely than the alternative theories. He said: "It's not like somebody could have pulled up right next to Nicola and grabbed her.
