Peter Debruge Chief Film CriticThe villagers refer to her as Old Maid Maria, invoking the witch’s name as a way to make children behave. But the Wolf-Eateress — or Volkojatka, as the superstitious peasants call this shape-shifting witch — is more than just a scary story in “You Won’t Be Alone.” The adults also believe in Old Maid Maria, with her sharp black claws and a face like Freddy Kreuger’s.
She has terrorized the countryside for nearly two centuries, surviving on the blood of newborns and wild animals. Once, very long ago, she wanted a child of her own. It’s a daring choice on the part of Macedonia-born writer-director Goran Stolevski to show Old Maid Maria in the film’s opening minutes.
Horror movies typically try to keep the monster hidden for as long as possible, and here, the makeup looks … well, like makeup: All but unrecognizable beneath a layer of synthetic skin — pockmarked as a slice of reheated pizza — and a wig of stringy white hair, Romanian actress Anamaria Marinca (“4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days”) reveals herself early as the Wolf-Eateress. But it’s not her appearance that haunts so much as her backstory, which won’t emerge until much later in a film which does for witches what “Let the Right One In” did for vampires: It asks us to rethink them entirely.
A veteran shorts director who brings years of experimentation and experience to his boldly unconventional feature debut, Stolevski has crafted a lyrical cinematic folktale. The language and setting are unfamiliar — a 19th-century Balkan village, where people speak in a half-forgotten local dialect — but there’s a clear narrative logic to it all, even if the first time through, audiences may as well accept they won’t get everything about the plot.

Peter Debruge Chief Film CriticAs the first film from the director of “Amélie” in nearly a decade, “Bigbug” is kind of a big deal. Sadly, it’s also a big disappointment — easily the most obnoxious Netflix original in some time, owing to the company’s trust in a director whose overactive imagination demands some kind of boundaries. At precisely the moment pandemic-confined audiences want to get out and breathe fresh air, Jean-Pierre Jeunet gives them a suffocating scenario in which a squabbling French family is trapped in their retro-modern home with several android assistants.

Elle Fanning is unrecognizable in the first official look at the true-crime series . In the upcoming limited Hulu drama, the actress portrays Michelle Carter, who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the “texting suicide” case surrounding the events leading up to the death of her boyfriend, Conrad Roy III (played here by Colton Ryan).
The Eyes of Tammy Faye, Tick, Tick... Boom!, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, this just might be the year of Garfield. WASHINGTON -- Fine art isn’t just nice to look at — it’s also attractive to criminals trying to launder money, finance terrorism and trade illegal drugs and arms. And the Treasury Department wants art dealers and financiers to do something about that. The agency issued a 40-page report Friday recommending that financial firms and art dealers set up an information-sharing database to track how sales of fine art are linked to bad actors who make anonymous purchases. The need to monitor art sales has become more complicated and necessary with the recent rise in sales of digital assets known as NFTs, or non-fungible tokens.Michael Greenwald, a former Treasury official and adjunct senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security, called the report “a critical first step for there to be a regulatory structure around the broader art market,” which he called one of the last unregulated markets.“This puts illicit actors and people in the art market on notice that this is a serious issue and will also lead to regulation of the NFT digital art market space,” he said.In issuing the report, the Treasury Department declined to take more robust steps toward creating new regulations on the art sales, after it found limited evidence of terrorist financing risk. However, the department did find evidence of money laundering in the high-value art market.
Peter Debruge Chief Film CriticIt takes some nerve casting a scandal-embattled star like Mel Gibson as a colorful TV celebrity suspected of killing his wife. Those who’ve stood by Gibson despite multiple attempts by the actor to sabotage his own career will likely admire the chutzpah of “Last Looks,” even if his flamboyantly named (and mustachioed) Alastair Pinch — a borderline-blotto, Colonel Sanders-looking Southern judge on a show called “Johnnie’s Bench” — is just a side character (the main suspect) in an overcrowded Hollywood detective story that’s got gimmicks to burn. The ringmaster of this three-ring circus is one Charlie Waldo (Charlie Hunnam, looking like he hasn’t shaved since “Sons of Anarchy”), a disgraced former LAPD golden boy with even wilder facial hair than Pinch.
Daniel Craig may be done with James Bond, but his next franchise is well and truly already established. Having portrayed Detective Benoit Blanc in Rian Johnson's Knives Out, the No Time To Die star returns for another murder mystery as the Southern gentlemen. Untitled Knives Out 2 was shot on the Greek island of Spetses last summer and sees the former 007 opposite an amazing cast just like last time.
