As the heatwave rages on, we are all looking for the best and cheapest hacks to stay cool amid the scorching heat. From leaving blinds closed throughout the day, to putting a frozen milk bottle in front of your desk fan, Scots are looking for anything to keep them cool in this unfamiliar weather.
Now, one woman has shared her genius £2 foil blanket hack, that has lowered her home’s temperature by up to four degrees - and takes one minute to set up. Jay Virdee thought of the idea after spotting a car with a large sunshade in the windscreen, wondering if she could do something similar at home.
Jay was "roasting" in her room and thought there could be an upgrade from the one-way window film, which blocks some UV rays, that she already had. First, she experimented with tinfoil but found it to be too pricey - as multiple rolls would be needed to cover the entire window and would have to be regularly replaced due to tearing.
It also created a "total blackout" effect which left her room too dark. After some digging, Jay found that an emergency foil blanket worked perfectly.
They are large, reusable, can be bought in multipacks and are transparent enough to be able to see out while reducing between 50% and 60% of the sun coming in. Jay’s brilliant hack does come with a couple of safety warnings to ensure that no one is negatively impacted by the use of this emergency item.
Jay, of Buckinghamshire, said: “One blanket goes a very long way - it is very big. They are only necessary for the windows receiving the most sun, so there’s no need to sell out any stores or raid emergency supplies.
“It’s best to apply in the morning or evening and do a 360-degree check outside the house to ensure it’s not reflecting any sun into vehicles or other
