A woman was rescued after getting into difficulties in the River Mersey this evening. It happened at the stretch of the river in Didsbury shortly before 5pm.
Fire crews, police and paramedics raced to Stenner Lane near Fletcher Moss Gardens after the alarm was raised. Eyewitnesses reported a number of emergency service vehicles parked just off Wilmslow Road near The Didsbury and Ye Olde Cock Inn pubs.
Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said two fire engines as well as a water incident unit and technical response unit attended.

They helped police in 'leading one woman to safety' they said. She was then handed over to the care of the ambulance service. The Manchester Evening News understands she was conscious and breathing. It is unclear if she was taken to hospital.
Crews remained at the scene for around an hour. A spokesperson for the GMFRS said: “At around 5pm today (Saturday, 15th July), firefighters were called to at an incident on Stenner Lane in Manchester.
“Two fire engines from Stockport and Withington fire stations, as well as the Technical Response Unit from Ashton-under-Lyne and the Water Incident Unit from Eccles fire stations quickly arrived at the scene.
“Fire crews supported colleagues from Greater Manchester Police (GMP) in leading one woman to safety, using water rescue equipment. The woman was then transferred to the care of the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS).
“Firefighters were at the scene for just over an hour.”
